The story behind Almost Still

I’m Danny Yiu, the photographer behind Almost Still, based in Vancouver. Since 2012, I’ve photographed more than 1,000 weddings, capturing the people, connections, and quiet moments that make each celebration unique.

I went to school in Vancouver as a child, before returning to Hong Kong, where I lived for eighteen years. Four years ago, I moved back to Vancouver. My time in both places is an important part of my story.

Over the years, weddings have brought me into the lives of many couples and families. Much of my experience began in Hong Kong, and my work has since grown to include celebrations here in Canada. Different places, different traditions—but always people coming together for something deeply personal.

My experience photographing Chinese weddings has given me a strong understanding of their traditional ceremonies and the flow of the day. This helps me anticipate important moments and work closely with couples and their families. As customs and arrangements vary from family to family, I take time beforehand to understand the details that matter to you, so I can photograph the celebrations with care and respect for your traditions.

What has stayed with me is how much happens around the moments everyone expects. A quiet conversation before the ceremony. A parent watching from across the room. Friends laughing together once the formalities are over. These moments may pass quickly, but they often become the memories that mean the most.

It begins with understanding you

Communication is a big part of how I work. Before thinking about photographs, I want to understand the people in them: what matters to you, who you want close, and how you hope your wedding day will feel.

You don’t need to arrive knowing how to pose or what to do in front of a camera. My approach is to offer clear, gentle guidance when it helps, and give you space when a moment is already unfolding naturally. I want the experience of being photographed to feel comfortable, so you can spend more of the day with the people you love.

That relationship matters beyond the images. Being heard, knowing what to expect, and feeling comfortable asking questions are all part of the experience I want to create.

My vision for Almost Still is for photographs and films to feel connected—shaped by the same attention to people, atmosphere, and the moments that make your celebration your own. Together, they can help you remember both how the day looked and how it felt to be there.

Why Almost Still

The name speaks to the moments I’m drawn to: a breath before something begins, a glance that lasts a second, a scene that feels quiet even while life moves around it.
